Introduction

Enochian Magic is one of the most mysterious and powerful systems of ceremonial magic in the Western occult tradition. Said to be revealed by angels to Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley in the late 16th century, it uses a divine language known as Enochian—believed to be the original “language of the angels.”

The Origins of Enochian Magic

According to Christian mysticism, creation itself was shaped by sacred words spoken by God. These divine words were said to be inscribed on a heavenly tablet later known as the Book of God’s Speech. The mystical language recorded there is believed to be Enochian, the pure language of angels and of the biblical patriarch Enoch, who “walked with God.”

In the 1500s, Dr. John Dee, a mathematician, astronomer, and royal advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, sought to recover the lost wisdom of the ancients. His pursuit of divine knowledge led him to Edward Kelley, a talented scryer and medium who could perceive and communicate with spirits. Together, Dee and Kelley conducted hundreds of spirit communications, carefully recording the angelic revelations they received.

The Language of Angels: What Is Enochian?

The Enochian language consists of 21 letters written from right to left. There are two main recorded versions:

  • Dee’s version, found in Five Books of Mysteries

  • Kelley’s version, preserved in Liber Loagaeth

Each contains unique variations, but both outline a structured celestial tongue with its own grammar, phonetics, and syntax.

Kelley’s writings include the 49×49 letter table, believed to be the first extensive text in the angelic language. Dee later compiled 48 poetic invocations known as the Claves Angelicae or Angelic Keys, used to summon or communicate with higher beings.

The 30 Aethyrs: Realms of Angelic Experience

One of the most fascinating aspects of Enochian Magic is the exploration of the 30 Aethyrs (or Aires). Each Aethyr represents a spiritual plane of consciousness, governed by a specific hierarchy of angels.

According to the Enochian system:

  • The Nineteenth Call—known as the Call of the Thirty Aethyrs—acts as a gateway to these higher realms.

  • Meditation and scrying using this call allow the practitioner to ascend through the Aethyrs, gaining insight and illumination.

  • Each Aethyr is ruled by three angelic governors, except for TEX, which has four.

The legendary occultist Aleister Crowley later performed visionary explorations of all 30 Aethyrs, recording his mystical experiences in The Vision and the Voice—a key text in modern ceremonial magic.

The Nineteenth Call: Gateway to the Divine

The Call of the Thirty Aethyrs is both an invocation and a key. It begins with the words “Madriax ds praf LIL chis Micaolz saanir…”—a phrase that bridges human consciousness with the angelic.

In Dee’s English translation, the call opens:

“O you heavens which dwell in the First Air, mighty in the parts of the Earth… Open the mysteries of your creation and make us partakers of undefiled knowledge.”

The purpose of this call is not mere communication, but spiritual ascent—to move beyond material limits and unite with divine intelligence.

Legacy of Enochian Magic

Enochian Magic remains one of the most studied and practiced systems in modern occultism. It bridges the realms of language, mysticism, and angelic theology, offering seekers a direct path toward divine understanding.

Its influence can be seen in the Golden Dawn, Thelema, and other Western esoteric orders. For students of magic, the Enochian system continues to represent the eternal human quest—to hear and understand the language of the divine.
